Pakistan–Southwest China Trade Cooperation

April 06, 2026

Trade between Pakistan and China’s southwestern regions (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Chongqing) continues to grow steadily, reflecting the expanding cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Leveraging regional logistics networks such as the Western Land-Sea New Corridor and expanding air cargo routes, bilateral trade has developed rapidly, supported by strong complementarities between Pakistan’s agricultural and resource sectors and Southwest China’s manufacturing industries. The Consulate General of Pakistan in Chengdu, established in 2007, serves as an important platform for promoting economic and trade cooperation between Pakistan and these four regions.

The trade structure between Pakistan and Southwest China is highly complementary. Southwest China exports a range of machinery, electronics, building materials, and consumer goods, while companies such as Changan Automobile are expanding exports of vehicles and components to Pakistan. Pakistan’s exports to the region mainly include agricultural products, textile materials, and mineral resources, such as dried chili peppers, pine nuts, rice, cotton yarn, copper ore, chromium ore, and marble, supporting both consumer markets and industrial production in Southwest China.

Agricultural cooperation has become a key pillar of bilateral engagement. Under the CPEC agricultural demonstration project, the two sides have jointly developed 30 chili farms covering around 16,000 acres in Pakistan. In 2024, the first shipment of 332 tons of Pakistani dried chili peppers arrived in Neijiang, Sichuan, successfully entering the regional food supply chain. Agricultural machinery from Guizhou and crop varieties such as rapeseed are also being introduced in Pakistan, while products such as ginger, garlic, and navel oranges from Southwest China are increasingly exported to Pakistan.

Logistics connectivity continues to strengthen trade ties. In May 2025, the Guiyang–Karachi all-cargo air route was launched, enabling efficient transport of goods such as electronics, apparel, and seafood. In addition, the Western Land-Sea New Corridor provides sea-land transport links connecting Southwest China with Pakistan via coastal ports, helping reduce transportation time and costs.

Looking ahead, Pakistan and Southwest China are well positioned to deepen cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing, new energy, and emerging industries, while further enhancing logistics connectivity and trade facilitation. With strong complementarities and growing business engagement, bilateral cooperation is expected to expand beyond trade toward a more integrated model of trade, investment, and industrial collaboration.
