Introduction

China remains one of the most preferred destinations for Pakistani students pursuing higher education. Quality education, cost-effectiveness, relatively streamlined visa processes, and the availability of a wide range of Chinese government and institutional scholarships continue to be key factors attracting Pakistani students to Chinese universities.

As of December 2025, the officially recorded number of Pakistani students studying in China stands at nearly 29,000. Among them, approximately 6,000 students are availing different types of scholarships, including Chinese Government scholarships, provincial and municipal scholarships, university-level scholarships, and other bilateral or sponsored programs. Pakistan continues to be one of the largest recipients of China’s overseas scholarship offerings, reflecting the strong educational partnership between the two countries.

The sustained growth in student mobility is closely linked with the broader framework of China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which has further strengthened people-to-people ties, academic collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives. Educational exchanges are regarded as a key pillar of long-term cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Pakistani students in China are enrolled across a diverse range of academic disciplines, including Engineering (various fields), Computer Science, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Business Administration, Finance, Economics and Trade, International Relations, Agriculture-related sciences, and Chinese Language programs. A significant proportion of Pakistani students are pursuing undergraduate medical degree programs, reflecting the strong reputation of Chinese medical universities.

China as an Education Destination

Chinese universities have made remarkable progress in recent years, with many institutions now ranked among the world’s leading universities. Thirteen Chinese universities are featured among the top 200 universities globally, underscoring China’s growing academic excellence and international recognition.

Some of the leading Chinese universities include:

  • Tsinghua University, Beijing
  • Peking University, Beijing
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai
  • Fudan University, Shanghai
  • University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Anhui

The steady improvement in global rankings can be attributed to strong government investment, comprehensive education sector reforms, and a strategic focus on high-quality development in emerging and frontier fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, biotechnology, and quantum computing. Chinese universities are increasingly recognized for producing high-impact research, particularly in STEM disciplines, validating the quality of education and innovation ecosystem.

In parallel, China’s policy of internationalization has transformed its campuses into globally diverse academic environments, attracting students from across the world. For international graduates, employability opportunities within China are gradually expanding, particularly for high-caliber talent in science, technology, research, and industry-linked fields. Additionally, China’s dynamic economy and expanding global footprint offer students valuable exposure to multinational corporations, research institutions, and industry leaders, enhancing both academic and professional development.

Earlier, during Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China (June 4-8, 2024), trade and investment remained central to discussions. Both sides highlighted CPEC’s second phase, focusing on industrial cooperation, technological innovation, and energy investments. Notably, China expressed willingness to strengthen supply chain integration, boost joint ventures, and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Pakistan’s priority sectors, including automobile manufacturing, agricultural processing, and IT services. They also agreed to accelerate key projects such as ML-1 railway upgradation, Gwadar Port development, and energy transmission infrastructure, ensuring greater connectivity for trade expansion.

The Embassy of Pakistan continues to facilitate educational cooperation, student support, and institutional linkages between Pakistan and China, with the objective of further strengthening academic exchanges and long-term people-to-people connectivity.
